Members of Arts Society Ebor and friends had a fantastic autumnal trip to Uzbekistan and Tajikistan engagingly led by the textile travel writer and Arts Society lecturer Chris Aslan. His connections and fluency in Uzbek made this a trip with an unique insight into the rapidly changing part of the world. We also had opportunities to see many craft workshops and the silk carpet production from worm to knotting . A memorable experience.

On Tuesday-Thursday 12-14 August we visited Manchester and Salford. The visit included trips to Manchester Art Gallery, the Lowry Gallery in Salford, a boat trip on the the river from Salford Quays and a Blue Badge guided tour of Manchester city centre that included the stunning Rylands Library.

The visit also included a Chinese Banquet in Manchester's Chinatown.

Our hotel was perfectly located in the heart of St. Peter's Square and the weather was warm and sunny. A great time was had by all.

On Wednesday 16 July we enjoyed a day in Beverley. This market town has many attractions, including an excellent lunch venue. We visited the outstanding churches – St Mary’s Parish Church and Beverley Minster.

On Wednesday 7 May at 11.30am, we met at St Mary’s Church Nun Monkton (off the A59).

The church of St Mary is Grade I listed. It was built in the early XIIIC on the site of Nun Monkton Priory. The nave and chancel survived but in 1873 the east end of the church was rebuilt and the stained glass, designed by Morris and Co. was installed. The beautiful 3-light east window is said to follow a design by Edward Burne-Jones. The cost of £7.50pp (payable to The Arts Society Ebor) covers a donation to the church.

Suzanne Fagence-Cooper talked to us about the history of the church and the remarkable William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones stained glass.

On a warm and sunny Thursday at the beginning of October 2024, a group of members travelled by bus, train or car to gather for lunch in Scarborough’s Stephen Joseph Theatre prior to a showing of Alan Ayckbourn’s latest – and said to be his last - play ‘Show and Tell’. Opinions about the play varied and the performance was somewhat marred before the interval by workmen drilling somewhere in the building. The actors coped admirably! So, we enjoyed a fine day out. Did any members linger for a paddle in the sea before returning home?

The Arts Society visited the newly refurbished Rochdale Town Hall, followed by a visit to Accrington to view the collection of Tiffany Glass at the Haworth Art Gallery.

We visit the Stamford Bridge Tapestry at the Old Station. Completed by volunteers in the style of the famous Bayeux tapestry – stitched in wool on linen – this is an outstanding piece of work. You can see more about it on the project website: http://stamfordbridgetapestry.org.uk/ . As the bridge is closed to traffic for repairs, the No. 10 bus terminates at the York side of the bridge on the A166. From there it is a short walk (800yds) over the footway to the Old Station. Car access will be via the A1079 and High Catton. There is ample car parking alongside the Old Station. Cost £10pp (max. of 20 spaces). First to the David Mellor Design Museum in Hathersage

Next to Cromford Mills the birthplace of the modern factory. Richard Arkwright’s development of the world’s first water-powered spinning mill in the 1770s left his son the richest commoner in Europe.

Porto and Lisbon 16-22 April 2024 [Note the slight change in dates since our October Newsletter]: Flying from Manchester on Tuesday 16 April we will spend 4 nights in Porto to explore this ancient city – a UNESCO World Heritage site, the Douro Valley and the city of Braga, founded by the Romans. By way of the beautiful city of Coimbra we travel to Lisbon for a two-night stay. From there we visit Sintra, another UNESCO World Heritage site with its stunning Moorish-style National Palace. A ‘taster’ opportunity to see some of the delights of Bradford city centre in advance of the many events planned for the 2025 UK City of Culture. Peter Burnett and John Edmonds will lead the tour, together with local architect Les Webb, to explore at street level some of the Victorian grandeur of the wealthiest C19th city outside of London. We will also question subsequent C20th & C21st development, including some unexpected treasures now under threat....

An afternoon guided tour of Bradford Cathedral starting at 14:30 will explore the cathedral history, decoration, William Morris stained glass, sculpture, and textiles.

Walking back through ‘Little Germany’ to the city centre, we may speculate the lost opportunities to link the two very separate railway stations and the traffic issues of the inner ring road. Depending on the weather, the tour is expected to finish at 16:30 in the city centre.

This three day Blue Badge guided coach trip to Cardiff took place from 4th - 7th October. On the way we visited Calke Abbey and Kedleston Hall on the way home – both National Trust properties. Our party stayed at The Coal Exchange Hotel for three nights where the tour focussed largely on the wealth that coal and the Marquis of Bute brought to Cardiff.

Led by Ann Anderson (Arts Society), this trip looked at Art Nouveau and Art Deco in and around Lille and Antwerp.

After a Eurostar journey to Lille, the group had an escorted tour of the centre of Lille, visiting notable Art Nouveau houses (e.g. Maison Coilliot by Hector Guimard). There was an evening lecture and an excelleny meal at the Brasserie Paix in Lille.

On Friday, a coach took the party to Villa Cavrois in the morning. This was a well restored Art Deco villa containing some fine architecture decoration and furninshings. We went to La Piscine in the afternoon which is a converted swimming baths - now an Art Deco museum and gallery.

On Saturday, a coach took us to Antwerp to see some notable Art Nouveau architecture, most of which was concentrated around an area known as 'The Golden Triangle' Some excellent examples included De Zonnebloeme house and 'Het Bootje' (The Little Boat) in 't Zuid district.

A guided day of interest on the Architecture of Hull, which started at 11am with coffee at the Ferens Art Gallery. This was be led by John Edmonds, who was involved in the design of the new Hull Truck theatre along with Keith Knight, an architect involved in the preservation and restoration of Beverley Gate.

In September 2022 , the Ebor members' trip went to another coastal port with a fascinating history; this time to Scotland and Dundee, staying on the bank of the Tay river. We enjoyed guided visits to the V&A Dundee;  Verdant Works to learn about the importance of the jute trade, and Discovery Point. This included a visit to the steamship, 'Discovery', made in Dundee and used by Ernest Shackleton for his Antarctic explorations. A guided walking tour led by two locals introduced us to the history and development of the city, including excellent street sculpture.  We finished the trip with a trip to the theatre, Dundee Rep. to see a classic Scottish comedy "Steaming".

In March , twenty four members had a three day trip to Liverpool.  Despite the chilly weather we enjoyed views of the Mersey from our Hotel at Albert Dock.  We had excellent support and information from Harriett our guide;  and our hilarious Liverpudlian coach driver, John .  

We visited Port Sunlight and the Lady Lever Gallery, as well as the Anthony Gormley 'Another Place', installation at Crosby beach.

The final day included a walking tour of the two Cathedrals and the Philharmonic pub. We shared good food and good company.

In January 2020 a day of special interest at the Hepworth Gallery in Wakefield focused on the building of the gallery and its role in regenerating a rundown area of Wakefield. The exhibition of early David Hockney and Alan Davie included their involvement with the early days of the gallery.

Sunday 29th September – Sunday October 2019

A group of 20, we set off to explore the history, the art and the architecture of this country, nestled in the heart of Eastern Europe. With an excellent local guide, Claudia, we learnt of the many influences upon the politics and art of Romania from the only Latin speaking state of the Roman Empire, to the expansionism of the Saxon, Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman empires, and Communist rule

We visited the painted monasteries of Bucovina, with both extraordinary exterior and interior frescos, showing the strength of the Christian heritage, Baroque and Gothic churches in Brasov, and the fortified church at Prejmer.

We travelled through the Carpathian Mountains, and the Bicaz Gorges, to visit a restored Saxon village at Viscri, and the medieval Citadel at Sighisoara, finishing for a day and night at Bucharest, for a guided tour, and evidence of the megalomania of Nicolae Ceausescu in the building of ‘The House of The People’.

It was a fascinating visit – through largely unspoilt countryside with magnificent views, to the ultra- modern city of Bucharest.

In September 2019, following a Society lecture on the same topic, Cristina Figueredo led an excellent study day on the Bayeux Tapestry .This was held in The Bar Convent.

June 2019 saw day trips to Ripon Cathedral and the moated Markenfield Hall.

11th – 13th May 2019

Our short overnight trip in 2019 was three days in Cumbria and South West Scotland . Visits to Dumfries House and Drumlanrig Castle were enjoyed In perfect May sunshine.

A group of members travelled to the British Museum in London for a talk and exhibition Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms: Art, Word, War which was linked with a lecture by York archaeologist, Dr Tania Dickinson on The Staffordshire Hoard.

The theme of exploring some of York’s less well-known buildings continued this year with a visit to Peasholme Green and gave the opportunity to learn more about the work of York Conservation Trust which owns, and then restores, and maintains, many of York’s historic buildings before renting them out.
